Numerical modeling of extreme wave interaction with point-absorber using OpenFOAM

Extreme waves are critical for the WEC’s development. CFD toolboxes have been widely used in simulation of extreme waves–structure interaction. However, quality mesh is a sensitive issue; large response can lead to deformation and subsequent numerical instability. In this paper, 100-year chosen from environmental contour Humboldt Bay site California, their interaction with WEC modeled using open-source software OpenFOAM. The overset technique an advanced method recently available OpenFOAM, able handle great body motions. Here, utilized compared commonly morphing method. two methods provide equivalent results, but latter prone fails complete simulations. Regarding impact on WECs, results further show that combination wave height steepness critical; i.e., does not necessarily result maximum forces, rather steeper sea states tend contribute higher loadings. Additionally, studied 40% generator’s damping, as it common control strategy during harsh conditions.
